I came across this interesting thought of Ralph Emerson about success. He is a philosopher from America in early 19th century (1803-1882). What intrigued me most is: how beautiful he has channelized his thoughts and words, such that, what has been written more than a century ago expresses more profound and deeper meaning in our time. I am not sure, but I believe, contemplation, uncluttered intellect and clarity of thoughts are the foundations on which such beautiful words were built.
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people
And the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
And endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty,
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a little better,
Whether by a healthy child,
A garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is the meaning of success.

For the longest time I believed, Emerson was the author of this work, however this website argues that and says it’s actually, Bessie Anderson Stanley. So I’m not really sure…
